PIG on the Escalator Rapids

June 16, 2005 - Day Four

We scouted 3 rapids. Two class 3’s (Wopinisha and Boxcar), and then a class 4 (Escalator). I was the guide for Wopinisha, we scouted it out and then we got back in our boats and went down it! We aced that baby! We got wet but that’s part of it. I was always in a boat with Lauren and that day I was with Katie H, Lauren, Jenny, and Alexis S. We did awesome, next came the “Boxcar Rapids. These rapids were a tad bit tougher. We found a great path to take. We were going exactly how we planned and out of nowhere, this huge wave came down on us, Jenny, Katie H, and I got tossed out of the raft! We ended up swimming a class 3 rapid! Most people would only dare to swim a class 1 or 2 but not usually a 3. It was a little scary because the current was so strong and fast but we all got back into a boat and everything was okay. No one got hurt. (During the whole trip our guides were always near by).

We paddled a ways down stream and we got to the Escalator rapids. Those were the class 4!! Scary for me! Caitlin, Jenny and Hana did a lot of convincing to get me to go on it. I was so scared after falling out on Boxcar, but I went and oh my gosh, we really hit it PERFECTLY. We didn’t even get any water in our raft. We hit the tongue dead on! It was scary but I’m so glad I went. A few miles after that, we portaged for two miles! We had fun on our walk, then back in to our boats and finally to a beach for camp on. It began to rain! Oh NO! We had to sleep under our shelters for the first time. I slept next to Allison. We talked about marching band/color guard for an hour once we went to bed. WE were tired though because we traveled 23 miles that day!! That’s a lot
