“Would you like to buy…?”
It takes a lot of courage to ask someone to buy product from your Girl Scout troop. It takes the same kind of courage to ask your parents for a special privilege, asking for a job or even asking for admission to the school of your choice. How do you prepare?
• To be successful you must know your product. Be familiar with the process for ordering or renewing magazine subscriptions. Know what types of chocolate and nuts are being offered and the cost of each.
• Smile and remember to be courteous. While you are striving to reach your own goal and are trying to help your troop reach theirs, you are also representing Girl Scouts. Wear your pin or your vest or sash.
• Speak clearly and look your customer in the eye. This will make them feel confident about their purchase.
• Be prepared to tell people why you asking them to make a purchase. Tell them what your troop is planning to do with the funds it will earn. Tell your customer what your goal is and how close you are to reaching it.
• Always say “Thank you” whether you have made a sale or not.
• Remember to follow all safety rules.
• Deliver the product in a timely manner. Doing so will increase your customer's satisfaction and you will have a customer for life!
Remember, there is a lot to learn from the Fall Product Program. How were you able to be successful? What worked? What did not work so well? How can you use what you have learned in other ways?

What do you want? It might be good grades; it might be a new MP3 Player. Have you thought about how you will get what you want? If you have, then you have set a goal.
Does your troop have a goal? Are you planning for a trip or a special activity? Has your group talked about how you will earn the funds for this special goal? The Fall Product Program can help your troop and it can help you learn something about yourself too!
Step 1 – Determine if your goal is attainable. Can you sell $500 of product? (If you do, your troop will earn $75)
Step 2 - Write it down! Writing your goal down makes it more likely that you will accomplish it.
Step 3 – Tell everyone what your goal is. Telling others what you have decided helps you commit to achieving it.
Step 4 – Figure out the small steps needed to reach the big goal.
-Who will you ask to order magazines?
-Who will you ask to buy chocolate or nuts?
-Will you call some people?
-Will your troop hold a booth sale?
Step 5 – Make a timeline. If you set a date for completing a step, you will make sure it gets done!
Having a goal gives you a direction. A goal channels your efforts and gives meaning to each step along the way. Achieving a goal increases your confidence. Striving for a goal takes courage and sticking to it, no matter how hard it might get builds character. |
